How to use the text encoding converter
- Open a text file that shows strange characters like
приветorÏðèâåò. - The source encoding is detected automatically — check the preview and change it if needed.
- Download the file as UTF-8 (with BOM for Excel and old Windows programs) or UTF-16.
Old Windows programs, DOS-era files, subtitles and CSV exports from accounting software are often saved in legacy code pages such as Windows-1251, KOI8-R or CP866. Opened on a modern computer they turn into unreadable symbols. This converter decodes more than twenty encodings — Cyrillic, Western and Central European, Greek, Turkish, Hebrew, Arabic, Baltic, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean — and saves clean UTF-8. You can also normalise Windows and Unix line endings at the same time.
