How to use the password protect PDF

  1. Choose a PDF file.
  2. Type the password people will need to open it (twice). Optionally block printing, copying or editing.
  3. Click Protect PDF and download the encrypted file.

The file is encrypted with AES-256, the strongest standard PDF encryption, supported by Adobe Reader, Chrome, Edge, macOS Preview and phone PDF apps. Use it before e-mailing payslips, contracts, medical letters or ID copies. Encryption happens entirely on your device using the open-source QPDF engine — the file and the password never leave your computer. There is no way to recover a forgotten password, so store it somewhere safe.

FAQ

How strong is the protection?

AES-256 with a good password (12+ characters, not a dictionary word) cannot realistically be broken. Short or common passwords can be guessed.

What do the permissions do?

They ask PDF readers not to allow printing, copying or editing. Reputable apps respect them, but they are weaker than the open password.
