How to extract text from an image

  1. Choose the language of the text in your picture.
  2. Open a photo, scan or screenshot — or paste one with Ctrl+V.
  3. Wait a few seconds, check the recognised text, then copy it or download it as a .txt file.

This free OCR (optical character recognition) tool turns pictures of documents, receipts, slides and screenshots into editable text. It uses the open-source Tesseract engine running inside your browser: your image is never uploaded. The first time you use a language, the engine and its language data (a few megabytes) are downloaded from a public CDN and then cached. Clear, straight, well-lit images give the best results; handwriting is usually not recognised reliably.
