Encrypt File
Protect any file with a password (AES-256) or decrypt it. Free, no sign-up, files stay on your device.
🔒 100% private — processing happens in your browser. Nothing is uploaded.
How to use the file encryption tool
- Choose any file. Files encrypted here (
.gkenc) are recognised automatically. - Enter a strong password (twice when encrypting).
- Click Encrypt or Decrypt — the result downloads immediately.
Send a contract, a scan of your documents or a backup through email or cloud storage without anyone else being able to read it. The file is encrypted with AES-256-GCM using your browser’s built-in Web Crypto API; the key is derived from your password with PBKDF2 (250,000 rounds) and a random salt, and the original file name is stored inside the encrypted data. The password never leaves this page and we cannot recover it for you — share it with the recipient through a different channel.
FAQ
Can I open a .gkenc file without this website?
The format is open: a 9-byte header “GETKGENC1”, 16-byte salt, 12-byte IV and the AES-GCM ciphertext. Any tool that supports PBKDF2-SHA256 and AES-GCM can decrypt it, but the easiest way is this page.
