How to use the file compare tool
- Choose the first file on the left and the second one on the right.
- Click Compare.
- See whether they are identical, where the first difference is, and the SHA-256 of both.
Find out whether two copies of a document, photo or backup are exactly the same — for example after copying to a USB stick, before deleting a duplicate, or to verify a download against the original. The comparison is byte by byte and the SHA-256 fingerprints are shown as well. Two files with different names but identical content are reported as identical. For comparing the wording of texts, use Compare Text (Diff).
